Hear me out – Open Mic Part 2
🎤 I had the privilege to be one of the speakers at “Hear me out – Open Mic Part 2” hosted by Media Clubroom where I shared “Your Career is Not a Ladder – It’s a Story” based on my book “Breaking the Glass Ceiling: An Insider Memoir.” https://lnkd.in/gmDs9wwC
🙏 Thank you all for resonating with my journey by choosing me as the “Audience Favorite” speaker. I learned a lot from my fellow speakers – Sakthivel Thevar 🌏 ‘Elite Performance’ Speaker and Coach Waltson Tan Meenakshi SP Carson Goh Idris Jonathan Cheetham Jun Yi Lee Imran Tahir. Most importantly, I am deeply grateful for the candid and constructive feedback given by our 4 distinguished judges – Chrissie Choo, Joe Augustin, Eldred Wee and Dawn Tay.
♥️ Nothing makes me more fulfilled than to know that my journey of having survived 2 near death experiences before 17, which made me prioritize my life values and purpose early on, could pique others. Regardless of how unconventional my career path may appear and how many pivots I had to make, it is a path I chose to pave that allows me to wake up dedicating my time and energy to my values, purpose and living a life of no regrets as I craft my story.
😨 😱 As I shared before, public speaking was one of my greatest fears growing up. When I moved to the US at 8 years old as a FOB (“fresh off the boat”) and had to spend 3 years learning English from scratch with other immigrants in ESL (“English as a second language”), I recall vividly my very first presentation – be an American hero. I chose Neil Armstrong because I had a hand-me-down astronaut costume for Halloween. I stood in front of class, stared at my classmates and the teacher. I shivered, stuttered, ready to pee in this costume. My speech only had 10 sentences, of which most were repeats just to occupy time, while the rest was silence as I had exhausted my vocabulary.
🪨 But it is these moments that serve as building blocks towards the climax of a chapter of our lives. Without obstacles and discomfort, our stories would be boring. While I found it mortifying, my classmates cheered me on and my teacher praised me for having the courage to be in the spotlight.
🫂 Do me a favor. Whatever roadblocks you may face in life today, please give them a big hug for adding some spice to your life story! 🫂

16th Annual INSEAD Asian PE & VC Conference
BIG THANK YOU to INSEAD Asian PE & VC Conference for giving me the privilege to be a panelist on “Navigating the Rollup Strategy: Scaling Growth Through Acquisitions in Fragmented Markets“ with two veterans Shuo-yen Choo and Jia Jih Chai moderated by Eric Koh. I enjoyed learning from my other panelists and the questions from the audience.
Some of the topics I shared from personal experiences were:
- Moving from billion-dollar auto dealerships in China to standalone preschools in Singapore, how does your approach to target selection change between large-scale industrial deals and small local businesses?
- Having the benefit of seeing both sides on large-scale and smaller local consolidations, what would be the top 2 or 3 lessons learned or things to avoid?
- Looking ahead, how do you see rollup strategies evolving in Southeast Asia? What new opportunities or challenges are emerging?
For Q&A we delved into some technical and detailed questions such as:
- Do you need prior industry experience?
- What key financial metrics do you focus on when assessing rollups?
- The importance of people, leadership and company culture
- What could make a rollup more successful?
- Rolling up for operational synergies vs purely multiple expansion
- What is the best way to finance rollups? Equity, debt, organic cash flow, etc?
